Boarding House Renovation: Sutton Common Room, Godalming, Surrey

Charterhouse School

2022 saw Charterhouse welcome girls from the age of 13 into the school and Nikki was honoured to be asked to design the common rooms for the two new girls’ boarding houses. New house Sutton was to be situated in one of the original buildings at the heart of the school. Whilst rich in heritage and architectural features, the ex-boys’ common room was looking tired, dull, and largely uninviting.

Nikki conceived a plan which enhanced the character of the building yet also inspired a homely, warm environment, creating a welcoming space for the female students to relax, study and socialise in. We cleverly weaved the Sutton house colour throughout the scheme, using tactile fabrics and soft furnishings alongside hand-selected furniture which was both comfortable yet also commercial grade. The resulting interior is a cosy space which fosters a home-from-home environment for the students and their families.

I have worked with Nikki on a number of high-profile projects at King’s College School Wimbledon, Charterhouse, and Edgeborough schools.  Throughout she has been extremely knowledgeable and very professional, working diligently to deliver the required brief. On all occasions the results have been excellent, exceeding expectations, and achieving glowing praise from pupils, staff and parents. I would highly recommend her.”
